Hi Pentaxian friends.
PMA 2010 is this coming weekend. It is held in Anaheim this year, instead of Las Vegas. I believe it was a mistake to move the convention from Las Vegas. There isn't much to do in Anaheim when compared to Las Vegas. I believe many people were enjoying the previous PMA conventions in Vegas because it was also a mini vacation for many.
You probably all know that Canon will not be at this year's PMA and that it is certainly discrediting the event. I suspect that many vendors will have smaller exhibition because of that, I'm not sure...but we will see this weekend.
Anaheim is almost in my back yard. It's a 45 minute drive, including usual traffic, and I will attent the convention again this year. This time, I won't have to spend anything on hotel room. I will probably only attent for one day, but I will report everything that I think will be of interest to you, my readers.

Thanks Yvon,
I really like Anaheim BTW. I would be happy to go if I could! While you are there, if you see Ned or John, or any Pentax reps, can you ask them what is up with the widespread reports of SDM failure, and if they intend on doing anything about it? There is a petition going around that has over 700 signatures on it so far from people not happy with SDM. For them not to say anything about this and let the problem fester, they are going to scare people away from Pentax.
Well it looks like it was a good thing it wasn't in Vegas and you had booked a stay there, since Pentax is pulling out. But since it's now in your backyard, will you still go?

Somanna,
It's still a great Photographic event. I do understand that advertizing is shifting toward the interned based approach, but I do like to check all different products, from lenses, tripods, camera bags, new gadgets, etc. It's like walking in the biggest camera store in the world. The answer is YES, I'm still going and will report on general camera equipment. I'm a die-hard Pentax fan, so I won't report on anything Canikon...but there are plenty of other stuff out there.
Yvon,
Can you please comment on the post from Anonymous above? I agree with it. Every day it seems on Pentax Forums, people complain about a new DA* SDM lens failure. There is also a petition about it. There are complaints on forums worldwide, yet Pentax says and does nothing.
You are a respected Pentax "representative" in a sense. Are you able to find out anything about this issue? All we hear second hand is that Pentax thinks the failure rate is normal, and comparable to other lenses. I have never seen anything like this from Pentax.
Bob,
Yes, I will be at the PMA this weekend but Pentax have pulled out of the show, along with Canon, Leica and some other companies. I never had any problems with my SDm but I too have read about some problems. When problems are reported by RiceHigh, I usually discard it as he is one upset person. I will contact Ned or John and a few other people I know at Pentax and see if the problem is as spread as indicated on some forums. I'll try to go to the bottom of this as I never BS about what I know and or don't comment when I don't know. The last time I talked to them, they were saying that forums are spreading stuff about the SDM lenses but they actually had less than a dozen problems reported to their repair department. I'll find out. Forums have a tendency to get people on the bandwagon of criticism just for sport.
Thank you Yvon,
This problem goes way beyond Rice high. He is actually not the one discussing this issue, it is real photographers. You can look over at Pentax Forums for example, threads started by well respected professional photographers, Pentax loyalists, etc. that have had failures and are frustrated by Pentax's silence. Many have had SDM lenses fail on them. I don't want to repeat names here without their permission. I have never seen such widespread complaints about Pentax products ever. This is not some "internet bandwagon phenomena" If it was, such respected photographers would not be involved. I have personally had two DA* lens failures myself which both were SDM problems according to Pentax service. I am so frustrated myself, I am considering switching to another brand, which would be difficult because I have so much pentax equipment. Pentax needs to admit there is a problem, and look into this. Why will the not let us use the screw drive in the DA* lenses if SDM fails?
