Update from 2008. Ninety-four years old Pentaxian from Maryland.

Update from 2008.  Eighty-six  Ninety-four years old Pentaxian hiking on the mountains of Maryland.

In 2008, my daughter met this gentleman, Mr. Thomas Canapp, while hiking at the Rock's State Park in Maryland. Today Mr. Canaap purchased the e-book for the Pentax K-3. He updated to the K-3 recently. This makes Mr. Canapp 94 years young.  While writing this blog, Mr.Canapp called me for some instructions to download the e-book. I feel privileged to have him as a client. I can only hope that I will follow his trail when I'm 94.

Pentax should give him a new K-1 for his loyalty to the brand. Mr. Canaap told me that these days, he likes to take macro photographs. Hopefully, I will be able to get some of his pictures and post them here.

Mr. Canaap, you are an inspiration to me.

Hi Pentax friends,

My daughter has recently moved to Maryland. This past weekend, she and her boyfriend, Matthiew, went on a hike in Rock State Park, MD. From what I understand, it was spectacular, especially with the autumn colors.

In searching the Internet, I found this: Maryland's second highest free-falling waterfall is located on the Falling Branch of Deer Creek in northern Harford County. The falls were well known to local native Americans and settlers, but in recent times the area was relatively unknown because the land was privately owned. Through the work of citizens groups, businesses, schools and government agencies the Falling Branch Area was added to Rocks State Park in 1993 and open to the public. Here are two pictures, (photographer unknown), of the falls.

While trekking around, she crossed path with a senior gentleman that had two Pentax cameras around his neck. (It looks like a Pentax *ist DL and a Spotmatic. I'm not sure). One DSLR and one 35mm SLR. She stopped and started a conversation with him.

Not bad for pictures taken with a cell phone!

From What I know thus far, he is eighty-six year's young. She emailed him back the next day. (See her email below). Mr. Canapp answered her tonight and will send her a panoramic image that he took of the falls. I think I will be able to know a little more about this fellow Pentaxian in a day or two. I understand that his first Pentax was given to him by his son, after the Vietnam war. His son bought it on his way back home, while he was in Japan. Mr. Canapp said he has been a Pentax fan ever since. He also has a K10D at home, but it is a little too heavy for an all day photo shoot. Here's the email:

Hi Mr. Canapp, It was very nice talking to you on Sunday. I spoke with my Dad, Yvon, regarding our conversation and the possibility of sending you a copy of the Pentax K10D book that he wrote. He agreed and thought it was really great that you have been a Pentax fan for so long In addition to writing books about cameras, my Dad also has a website called http://pentaxdslrs.blogspot.com/
. He writes all kinds of things that have to do with Pentax cameras and photography. He writes nearly everyday and is always looking for new topics. When I told that I met a gentleman on the side of a mountain carrying two Pentax cameras, he thought it was great. If you wouldn't mind, he would like to write a little about you. (I sent him the picture I took of you). Please visit his website and read the stories. Send him an email. As far as the k10d book goes, I will have it shipped to the address on the business card if that's okay with you. It will be coming from California, so it may take a week or so after you confirm your address. I know how rare it can be for a photographer to have a photo of himself. :) I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Marisa

Me and my human Dad went on Big Bear Lake mountain today, and he brought his Pentax K-3.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

 Hi Photographer friends,

I have a new human Dad, and today we went to Big Bear Mountain to cut wood for the winter. My human Dad and I left early this morning and drove into the wood up to an incredible elevation of 7,542 ft.  That's very high. My human Dad brought his camera, a Pentax K-3 and some Pentax Lenses. He wanted to take pictures of my first trek...whatever!

I'm just pretending, I can't drive a car yet!

Once we got there, my job was to hold the car, so he tied the car to me and I kept it in place for the whole time. I only stumbled once because there was this big boulder in my way.  It only took me five minutes to spill all of my water. We only had one bottle for the both of us so we were careful after that.

I'm holding the car while he is cutting wood.

Did you see this big boulder, no wonder I tripped.

The car isn't going anywhere, not on my watch anyway.

After cutting and gathering enough wood for today, he drove to a big rock formation, almost all the way to the top of the mountain, a place called Pacific Crest Trail.  I met other humans there and they all wanted to pet me. That's okay, they were all nice.

Then I climbed the big rocks (with a little help from my human Dad) and he took a bunch of pictures. I have to admit that I'm pretty cute.

This is nearly 8,000 feet elevation.  The Pacific Crest Trail.

See how good I am at climbing! I can do it with three legs...see!

Wow, this is high and I don't want to get too close to the edge.

I'm just posing for Canine Magazine.

It's time to go.

Coming back, the road was rough and I bounced back and forth in the  car. When we arrived home, he gave me some Puppy Chow and he added some warm chicken gravy to it.  It was yummy.

Now I am in my crate for the night and I'll be a good dog, but he will have to bring me out about every four hours. I'm only eight weeks old and my kidneys are small. I will only get better at holding it as I grow up. I think I'm going to like this new human Dad and my new human Mom.

Thank you for reading. I'll let you know when I go to some more adventures.

Maggie.
By the way, I am an Australian Shepherd / Border Collie mix.

It seems to me like the Pentax K-S2 is not selling very well. Why? Timing is everything.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

 Hi Photographer friends,

It seems to me that the Pentax K-S2 is not selling very well. Why?

I don't actually know if it sells good or not, but judging by the e-books I sell, the K-S2 is not doing very good. My newest e-book, for the K-S2 is my best e-book ever. There are more images, illustrations,  internet links and links within the e-book. The template used for that e-book has been revised to a more intuitive format.

I sell the K-3/K-3II e-book 10 to 1 when compared to the K-S2. I sell the K-5/K-5II e-books 5 to 1 when compared to the K-S2.

The K-S2 is a great little camera. It's the first Pentax with Wi-Fi and the first with the rotating screen. I thought the sales would go through the roof with it. So...why is it not selling that well?

For one thing, I think that many people are awaiting for the introduction of the Full Frame Pentax this fall.

But I really think that the main reason is its price. It's not that the camera is crazy expensive, but its introduction to the market was not done wisely, in my opinion.

As I write this, the K-S2 with the 18-50mm kit lens is selling for $674.99 with free expedited shipping.

The remaining K-3 still new and still available at most stores, is selling for $749,00 with free expedited shipping and the K-3II is selling for $935.24 also with free expedited shipping The kit lens in not included, but I suspect that they sell way more of these cameras without the kit lens.

On the used market, like EBay, the K-3 can be found at an average of around $ 650.00.  The K-3 is definitely a better DSLR than the K-S2. People are not stupid, they can see value for the money and the K-3 is the best value in the Pentax world at this time.

They should have waited until  the K-3 stocks were depleted or introduce the K-S2 at around $500.00.

What do you think?

Thank you for reading,

Yvon Bourque

 Hi Photographer friends,

I am in Maryland with my daughter. We drove around in Pennsylvania,  and I think I found the Holy Grail of Old Cars junkyard. It is located in Delta, and it looks like it's the only thing going on in Delta.

Size comparison between the Pentax K-S2 and the Pentax K-3.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

 Hi Photographer friends,

I thought you would like to compare. The K-S2 seems to have so much more options than previous Pentax DSLRs. I can only imagine what the upcoming Full Frame Pentax will be like.

It looks like I will have the e-book for the K-S2 ready by the end of March. Email me brqyvn@gmail.com if you would like to receive an email when the e-book is ready for sale.

Best Regards,

Yvon Bourque

Let's get away from the new FF Pentax and lenses for a while and look at what we can do to improve "not-so-good" images.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

Hi Photographer friends,

Color images are great, but sometimes they lack punch and no matter what you do, you can't make them project what you had in mind.

I like Black & White images but they are more often than not very cold. I found that turning some images to antique looking in Photoshop Lightroom often save some bland images. There is a little more to it, but the process in most Imaging software is about the same.

When you turn an image to basically a Black & White (or antique or sepia which renders warmer images) in Lightroom, the color saturation section can be used like the old Black & White film filters. Playing with blue, red, yellow, green and orange filters, you can change the intensity of the shadows and contrasts of your image.

You ought to try this on some of your images you find flat. You might be surprised. The images below looked flat to me and now I believe they have more punch and project more of a 3D look.

All images were taken a while back using the Pentax K-5 or K-7.

From wandering in an RV for two years to a more permanent place...Big Bear Lake, California.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

 Hi Photographer friends,

We've been wandering across the Country for the last two years. It was a lot of fun, but now, we needed to settle down some. We looked at several locations, from Vegas to  Bend Oregon, East Coast to West Coast, Desert to Ocean, and honestly we like all those places. Where could we settle down and be close to the ocean, the mountains, the desert, the forest, the big City, the small town? There's no such place...so I thought.

We re-discovered Big Bear Lake in California. The lake is located at around 7,000 ft elevation. It is a small town, but from there you can be in almost any climate within an hour. Los Angeles is west of it, Palm Springs is to the East, beaches are to the south and the desert is to the north, all reachable within about an hour, give or take. Where else can you swim nearby in the morning, ski in the afternoon and dine at a fine five star restaurant at night?

Big Bear is a touristic area with so much to do. In the winter, there are several ski resorts. Of course there is skiing, snow boarding, tubing, cross country skiing, hiking, snow shoeing, off roar tours, or just relaxing in front of the fireplace at one of the many world class resort in the area.

Summer is even more fun. Fishing, boating, biking, hiking, sailing, horse back riding, four wheeling, swimming, Kayaking, camping, etc.

The most appealing reason for me is Photography. The scenery is breathtaking, the wildlife abundant and the opportunities endless. Me and my Pentax equipment will live happily there. Don't think for one minute that my involvement in photography will diminish. On the contrary, I will bring my photography to new levels. I might start a studio  or offer workshops. I will certainly continue writing e-books. The future is exciting.

We will be in the house for Christmas, and I think we might just have a white Christmas.

Although we would love to be near our combined children and grandchildren, they are virtually in all four corners of the Country. Maybe this fantastic location will bring them to us.
