The ever expanding family of the Pentax K-7.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

How many times have you heard that Pentax did not have enough lenses for their DSLR systems? Although that was true a few years ago, I believe that the Pentax system has evolved quite a bit. I think we have all the lenses needed to make the system a great system, except maybe a 400mm or 600mm lens. They are actually working on it, but the FA* series of powerful telephotos can still be found on Ebay and in Japan. Picture below are the current K-7 family of lenses and flashes.

How many of you purchased one of each? Probably none of you, but it's nice to know that there are plenty of lenses to choose from. Sigma and Tamron have super telephotos available right now, if you don't mind using glass other than Pentax. I don't use anything other than Pentax lenses myself, but that's just me.

Thanks for reading.

I guess we're pretty well covered in the lower parts.. :) Funny thing though is how many of the lenses in that image are variations of the 18-55 and 50-200 kit zooms :p

Stian,

I actually counted 24 lenses in the photo plus the two installed on each camera. That's a totsl of 26lenses. Looking at Pentax USA's blogsite, there are 26 lenses currently available, without counting any duplicates of the 18-50 or the 50-200.So I guess in the photo, there must not be any duplicates. Can you point them out if there are any?

Hi,

I think we are not fully covered. A very fast wide-angle lens is still missing. Something like a 1.4/20 or 2/20. It is probably very hard to build such a lens, but Pentax is famous for its primes, so why not?

Also an updated version of the 1.8/31, dedicated to digital and/or aps-c (with quickshift!) would be welcome.

Apart from that, the lens line is fine!

Noticeably missing: a weather-sealed normal prime.

We need both longer and shorter primes in the DA* class. A 400 f4 and 11 0r 12 mm F2.8, the 14 is just too close to the 16-50 - perhaps an 11-16 zoom might suffice instead of a prime.

Also the 1.4 teleconverter that was on the roadmap for a while. Perhaps a 70 macro to compliment the 35 limited, or better yet a 60-120 true macro zoom (like the 70-180 that Nikon had)

Well, anyway that's my wish list but not necessarily in the order listed.

I would love to see the APS-C equivalent of the 43mm in the DA series, which Pentax has said is the 'ideal' focal length for 35mm due to it being the same as the diagonal of the film frame.

Currently my manual-focus 28mm fills that role. There doesn't seem to be an autofocus version of this length prime in production.

So, a DA 28mm Limited would be nice :D

Aside from that, I agree with you, Yvon, that the system is mainly missing some super-telephoto lenses :)

The lens line is just great! The only thing I'm missing is a swivel AF360FGZ. I don't understand why you have to buy AF540 to be able to bounce the light when you hold the body vertically...And maybe a new flash unit like SB-900 would be nice?:)

Yvon, actually you might be right here. I was just having a quick look and was thinking that the lenses with the round hoods on the left was the different incarnations of 50-200, and the ones next to them was 18-55s.. But at closer inspections it looks to be different lenses.. I believe I see both the normal version and the DA-L (without hoods, in front of DA*300) of 18-55 and 50-200 though.

Is this image available in a larger format?

Stian,

I don't have a bigger image, but that's not all that important, my point is that Pentax have more lenses now and hopefully will introduce longer telephotos in the near future.

I've never had a problem with using non-pentax glass. I extensively use a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which has provided me with extremely sharp images. I bought it instead of the pentax 16-50 becouse it seemed to provide equally good results for half the price.
