Big Bear Lake, California, we got slammed with 24 inches, or more, of that white stuff.

Email: brqyvn@gmail.com

 Hi Photographer friends,

Just a few days ago, I was writing about why I preferred California over my hometown of Montreal, in the winter. I guess the Snow Authorities read my post and decided to dump more than 24 inches of snow here, in the Big Bear area. The good thing is that it won't last for six Months or more. It might all be gone next week. California really needs the rain and snow runoff to replenish the ground water.

There is a lot of tranquility here on the mountain, and it is spectacular when covered with a thick white blanket. There is something about mountains with pine trees and  snow.

I took all the images with my trusty Pentax K-3. I love that camera.

I love my hometown of Montreal...but these images explain why I now live in California.

 Hi Photographer friends,

My Pentax K-3 is better insulated for snow and rain than I am.

It's fun for 10 minutes, but it gets old quick.

When you know what's important, snowing  or not.

It is hard to balance a bicycle in the snow, and its even crazier to even try.

Snow or not, some basic needs have got to be met.
Where is my car?
That's what happens when you leave your window partly open!

Where I live in California is called Big Bear Lake. I chose this place because it has the four seasons but the snow doesn't last six Months or more. Montreal had 16 inches of snow yesterday  and we had one inch.
...and this is Big Bear Lake.

My Pentax K-3 is the best DSLR I have ever owned, but without memory cards, it can't do much. That's when my iPhone came to the rescue.

Hi Photographer friends,

After about eight inches of snow overnight last week, I headed up to Big Bear Lake. We are moving there in the next few weeks, but I wanted to go see how it looked with a blanket of snow. On my way up, I realized that I had left my SDHC memory cards at home. The K-3 is a wonderful camera but it does need memory cards.

The scenery was spectacular and I decided  to use the cheap camera within the iPhone 5s, instead of driving back fifty miles. I am surprised at the results I  obtained. I can only imagine what it would have looked like with the K-3.

Oh well! I'm pretty sure we will get more snow and I will do an essay on Big Bear Lake soon. For now, I am still amazed of the iPhone results. These images are direct from the iPhone, without any post process. I just emailed them to myself and posted them.

I'm from Montreal, and I grew up thinking everyone had a snowy season. However, now that I'm older, I like snow more than ever, but in photographs.

Hi Photographer friends,

I was born and grew up in Montreal, where the winters are harsh and long. I love snow and winter sports...but now I like it more in photographs. There was a snow storm in Montreal this week. Two of my nieces posted pictures on Facebook. It reminds me as to why I'm in California.  I love Montreal in the summer, as there is always something exciting to do. It a City of Festivals, all summer long and every week. Here is what it looks like at this time:

On another note, I received the Pentax K-5 II today and I will post my impression of it in a little while.

If you got a K-5, K-5II, K-5 II s or a K-30 from Santa Claus, we have e-books on all these cameras, to get you up to speed in a flash. E-Books

In about two weeks, I will spending five days in Las Vegas, specifically at the PMA / CES convention. I will be posting my findings every day. Of course, I will spent a fair amount of time inquiring about the Pentax stuff and everything that works with Pentax.

Fun in the Snowstorm

by Miserere

I was very envious of Yvon the other day, driving around the snow taking pictures, so I decided I wouldn't be left behind in the snow picture-taking department. Of course, I was missing a few a things. There are no deserts around Boston, I don't have a fancy red jeep, and my wife just laughed at me when I asked her to come take photos with me in the cold. Oh, and there was no snow. That last one really foiled my plans.

As luck would have it, the same storm that dumped a few inches of snow in the Mojave Desert kept working its way across the United States and eventually made it to Boston last Friday, December 19. It started snowing around 13:00 and by the time I left work to head home a little before 18:00 we had several inches of snow. The worst part was that it was still snowing and the wind was blowing quite fiercely, making me wish I had snow goggles.

I'm not one to turn down a photo opportunity, so I bundled up, put my K10D inside my jacket, and went outside. Taking pictures was tricky because I had to keep snow from blowing onto the front of the lens...and my fingers from freezing. I was using an old manual-focus Kiron 24mm f/2, so focusing was also challenging. Most of the time I just kept the lens at the hyperfocal setting or guessed the focusing distance. Have I ever mentioned how much I enjoy using old lenses?

Here are a few photos taken during my trek home. You'll be happy to know that I didn't lose any fingers in the process and the K10D performed admirably. Note the snow flying sideways!

Snow in California on September 6th, 2007

Just kidding of course. It's been so hot, here in California for the past two weeks, that I wished for snow. The thermometer has been registering above 100 Degree Fahrenheit almost everyday. There isn't really anything that we can do about it. I haven't written much lately because I've been burning the midnight oil for the last two weeks, trying to finish my Pentax K100D book. So...I thought that a few refreshing winter scenes would help cooling off.
