# 15 - Our current two-year RV trip across North America. This week's featured City; Las Cruces, New Mexico. I used the Pentax K-3.

We are travelling with our RV and this  in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 

We were pleasantly surprised while visiting New Mexico. It is a  beautiful area full of traditions. The culture is rich with a mix of Native Americans and Mexicans descendants. This City is really a good example of the Southwest. We were in Las Cruces last November, on our way to Southern Texas for the winter.

We would have liked to visit Santa Fe as well, but did not have time. We are currently driving back to California  for business and may visit more of New Mexico. We are in Bandera, Texas this week and I hope to have a great series of image of this great Cowboy town for next week's images.

Many of the images I took in the Southwest, including some of the images herein are featured in my e-book for the Pentax K-3. It is definitely one of the most picturesque region of our Country.




The images below were taken with my Ricoh/Pentax K-3 and a few lenses. I used the smc Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 and the smc Pentax DA Star 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF)SDM.

    This is my favorite setup when shooting walkabouts.

    I believe that the marriage of Ricoh and Pentax is producing  great new cameras. The Pentax K-3 has just been announced and it's going to be another innovative DSLR.  

    Ricoh has done more for the Pentax legacy than Hoya ever did. Since Ricoh already produced cameras of their own, blending the technology of both companies can only be a plus. For that reason, I will accept the Ricoh cameras as part of the family. Ricoh and Pentax cameras are like brothers and sisters. I will be publishing a new e-book for the Ricoh GR. I will be available in a few weeks through ebooks4cameras.com

    A little while back, April 2013, Ricoh introduced the Ricoh GR with an APS-C, 16.3 Megapixels CMOS sensor. That is the same size as the sensor used for the Pentax K-5. 

    I got the Ricoh GR yesterday and I am writing an e-book about it. It is really an exceptional compact camera with so much capabilities. It is an ideal camera for travelling and for street photography. It allows sophisticated customizing and produces fantastic images. The lens has an aperture of  f/2.8 with 9 diaphragm blades. The bokeh is great.

    Here is what DPReview had to say about the GR:

    • Excellent image quality in Raw, very good in JPEG
    • Sharp lens with consistency at wide apertures and close working distances
    • Large sensor in genuinely small body
    • Highly customizable and responsive user interface
    • Excellent build quality

    Nikon announces their new Flagship, the D4. Only 16.2 megapixels. What's the message here?

    Nikon just announced their new flagship DSLR, the D4.  I'm a Pentax user and why do I post this announcement about Nikon? Check the D4 on B&H Photo.

    This new announcement from Nikon sends a clear message...to me anyway. They are using the FX sensor for this camera. but it's only 16.2 MP. This is a clear message that the Full Frame megapixels sensors are over-rated. Technology has come a long way and APS-C sensors are capable of taking better images than what our eyes can see. This full frame non-sense was the way manufacturers got away cheap by making the old 35mm film format the defacto standard of what full frame should be and a way to reuse the 35mm format lenses.

    Every sensor is a full frame sensor, it's the lenses used that are not matching the sensor. Nikon has chosen a 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor. 16.2 megapixels is good enough for 99% + of the time and produces file sizes easily manipulated with today's computers for post-processing.

    Pentax is the smartest camera maker out there. They use APC-C sensors or Medium format like the 645D. They were ridiculed for making color camera bodies, but now the entire industry does. They designed the "Q" and once again ridiculed, but Nikon copied the concept immediately.

    If the APS-C sized sensor is so inferior to the full frame, as many people claim,why is it that Canon just introduced the EOS 7D?

    If I had a dollar for everytime someone told me that the APS-C size sensor that Pentax uses is not as good as a Full Frame sensor...well I would be rich by now. We hear the argument all the time that Full Frame is the only way to go and that "my next camera will be a full frame". The fact is that only 5% of the camera sold worldwide are Full Frame. That's not a big market and it is a market mostly used by Pros. The prices for Full Frame sensors will remain high because of the cost of making larger sensors from the same standard sized silicon wafers.

    Why would Canon introduce a new (1.5 crop factor) DSLR? The EOS 7D is indeed an APS-C. DSLR. Since Canon now adopts it, does it make it any better? Furthermore, their new sensor is a CMOS with 18 mega pixels. I thought that the optimum and maximum effective mega pixels on an APS-C sensor was around 12 mega pixels!

    It is obvious that Canon really believes that APS-C is the way to go for the consumers (the 95% of them that don't purchase Full Frame DSLRs).

    To me, that reinforces my loyalty to Pentax. Why would a giant like Canon revert to APS-C sensors, just like Pentax? I bet you that sites that favor Canon (we all know who they are) will now praise the virtues of Canon APS-C sensors...Hello! Isn't it what Pentax has been doing all along?

    A 200mm lens is always a 200mm lens, whether it is used on a FF or an APS-C sized sensor DSLR. Am I confusing you? Revisions and clarifications!

    Hi Pentaxian friends,

    We all know that a 200mm lens is always a 200mm lens whether it is installed on an Full Frame DSLR or on an APS-C DSLR (you can replace the 200mm with any focal length, it all works the same). It is the crop factor of the APS-C sensors that changes as we are losing part of the image projected from the image circle. The angle of view changes, but never the focal length. As an example, shooting with a 200mm lens using the K20D , one would have an image similar, (in angle of view), to a 300mm lens. Right? Yes indeed, but the focal length would still be 200mm.

    Some are concerned that since part of the image is actually lost, the cropping diminishes the quality of the picture. It doesn't. If you were to crop an image, taken with a full frame DSLR with, say, a 14.2MP sensor, to the size of an APS-C sensor, yes there would be a loss of details. You would wind up with an image re-sized to about 9.5MP. If you take a picture with the K20D equipped with an APS-C sensor, the crop actually happens outside the image circle of the sensor and the image remains that of a 14.2MP sensor. So isn't it a benefit to be able to extrapolate 300mm out of a 200mm lens? Oh yes, the next argument I usually hear is that wide angle lenses are also affected the same way and a 20mm wide angle lens would act like a 30mm lens. That's true, but since the maximum aperture of the lens installed remains the same when used on an APS-C sensor, don't you think that it's a positive thing? You can purchase a super wide angle lens for $300.00 to $600.00, but try to purchase a 300mm f/2.8 lens for under $4,000.00. You can purchase the Pentax DA* 200mm f/2.8 for around $800.00 and on your Pentax DSLR, it's like having a $4,000.00 300mm f/2.8 lens on a Full Frame DSLR.

    Theoretically, there are other things to consider. The bokeh of a 300mm lens is different than that of a 200mm lens. It is usually smoother (but not necessarily as the lens construction and the number of Diaphragm Blades also make a difference). The compression effect of a 300mm is greater than that of a 200mm. In other words, a 300mm makes objects appear closer to each other that in reality, more so than a 200mm and certainly a lot more so than a 50mm lens or wide angle lens. I wanted to test the above and find out for myself what were the real tangible differences. I am lucky enough to have the DA* 200mm and the DA* 300mm lenses. I don't have a Pentax FF DSLR (nobody does thus far), but I figured that if I were to take some photos with both lenses using my K20D, then adjust the results so that the final images were the same sizes with the same framing, I would see what the differences were. Here are my results.


    Difference in Bokeh! The pictures above show an image taken with the DA* 200mm @ f/4 (top photo) and with the DA* 300mm @ f/4 (above photo). The images were re-sized to show approximately the same image framing. There is a small difference between the bokeh. The 300mm produced a little creamier bokeh. Is the difference enough to prove a point? You decide.



    Difference in compression! Above, I took roughly the same picture using the DA* 200mm and the DA* 300mm both set @ f/4. The darker portions of the images represent about the same framing. The two images below show the results taken with the 200mm and the 300mm when matched to the same framing sizes. I cannot see a big difference between the two. Can you?

    I ask you, did I misunderstood something or did I misunderstood everything?

    ** Looking at the comments and emails received, it seems that I have confused a lot of people with this post. Maybe my "Franglish" is getting in the way. My point is simply that the pictures taken with a 200mm lens used on an APS-C sensor will be similar to the pictures taken witth a 300mm used on a full frame DSLR. If there are differences, I don't think that they are noticeable enough to bother with. The K20D with the 14.6MP CMOS sensor gives me better results than I had using "Full Frame" 35mm films. Agreeing that the picture quality of the K20D meets your requirements, one is better off with an APS-C sensor when it comes to costs. The advantage of gaining on the telephoto side outweights the benefits of gaining on the wide angle side with a FF camera. A 35mm format wide angle lens (14mm @ f/2.8 or 21mm f/2.8 when used on APS-C) ~$300 to $600 - 35mm format telephoto (200mm @ f/2.8 or 300mm still at f/2.8 when used on APS-C) ~ $1400 to $5000. It gets even better when using a 35mm format telephoto of 300mm f/2.8 on an APS-C DSLR.

    It's not the camera. It's not FF or APS-C. It's the photographer.

    As Editor and publisher of this blogsite, I try to stay in touch by reading as many other sites as possible. I belong to most Pentax forums and participate in discussions as much as time permits. You can also see that there are certain blogsites or websites that are included in my Links on the right side of this blog. These are my preferred sites.

    For months, we have been preaching that FF versus APS-C will not produce pictures that the viewers will be able to differentiate. The Online Photographer (TOP), administered by Michael Johnston, has a great post Today, joining our position on the subject.



    The Full-Frame Dilemma...and a Cure. Pay him a visit. It is also comforting to know that he has used a Pentax K20D for his picture example in the article. He also has a link to a Canon point and shoot photo contest. There were fifty-five thousand participant, and the overall winning shot was taken with a point and shoot camera, installed on a $20.00 tripod. You see...it's not the camera!

    Is the Image Circle of the Pentax DA 70mm Ltd big enough for Full Frame? (L'article est aussi en Français.)

    About one Month ago, I casually tested all my DA and DA* lenses on a 35mm Pentax PZ-10 to see if the image circle would cover a full frame sensor, should Pentax ever build such DSLR. I was surprised that many lenses were actually useable on a full frame recording media. I know…Pentax still doesn’t have a Full Frame sensor, but you never know.

    I received some comments and many e-mails asking for a more thorough test of the lenses. I don’t test anything in a laboratory. I test everything I purchase or use in real time, in the real world, by taking real photographs. I’m never going to change, I'm too old for that.

    So…I tested the Pentax DA 70mm f 2.4 Ltd in, you guessed it, real time, in the real world, by taking real photographs. Here’s how I proceeded: I used a Pentax ZX-30 35mm SLR (to simulate a Full Frame sensor) with the DA 70mm and took three pictures at close range at f 2.4, f 8, and f 22, and three pictures at a much greater distance, close to infinity, with the same apertures. With the ZX-30 mounted on a tripod, I took the pictures using the timer. The film used was Fuji ISO 400. Then I used the K20D with the same lens, mounted on the same tripod, at the same location, set at ISO 400 equivalent and repeated the above procedures.

    Of course, the DA 70mm remains a 70mm lens on the ZX-30 but performs as a 105mm lens with the crop factor of 1.5 of the APS-C sensor. The results above are more or less self-explanatory. The DA 70mm will work in the event that Pentax ever introduce a Full Frame DSLR. Feel confident that if you already purchased a DA 70mm, or plan on purchasing one, it will work just fine on a Full Frame DSLR. The 35mm film negatives were inherently cropped a little in the scanning process, but not enough to compromise any pictures.

    I will test all the DA and DA* lenses I have in the coming weeks, using the same method. It's not very scientific, but it worked for me. It's what I wanted to know and already suspected.

    Il y a environ un mois, j'ai examiné tous mes objectifs DA et DA* avec un appareil 35mm de Pentax, le PZ-10, pour voir si le cercle d'image couvrirait une pellicule mesurant 24mm x 36mm. Il est toujours possible que Pentax construisera une telle camera. J'ai été étonné que beaucoup d'objectifs fussent réellement utilisables sur de pleins médias « 24mm x 36mm ». Je sais que Pentax n'a toujours pas pris une décision, mais vous ne savez jamais.

    J'ai reçu quelques commentaires et beaucoup d’e-mail demandant un test plus complet des objectifs. Je n'examine rien dans un laboratoire. J'examine tout ce que j'achète en utilisation en temps réel, dans le monde réel, et en prenant de vraies photos. Je ne vais jamais changer, Je suis trop vieux pour cela.

    Alors… j'ai examiné le DA 70mm f 2.4 Ltd de Pentax ci-dessus, vous l.avez deviné, en temps réel, dans un monde réel, et en prenant des vraies photos. Voici comment j'ai procédé : J'ai employé un Pentax ZX-30 35mm SLR (pour simuler une pleine vue 24mm x 36mm) avec le DA 70mm et j’ai pris trois photos avec une aperture de f 2.4, f 8, et f 22, et trois autres photos à une distance beaucoup plus grande, près de l'infinité, avec les mêmes ouvertures. Le ZX-30 monté sur un trépied, j'ai pris les photos. Le film utilisé était ISO 400 de Fuji.

    Ensuite, j'ai employé le K20D avec la même lentille. Je l’ai monté sur le même trépied, au même endroit, avec l’ISO 400 équivalent et j’ai répétée les mêmes procédures ci-dessus. Naturellement, le DA 70mm reste un objectif de 70mm sur le ZX-30 mais deviens comme un objectif de 105mm avec le facteur de 1.5 d'APS-C. Les résultats ci-dessus sont plus ou moins explicites. Le DA 70mm seras adéquat au cas où Pentax poursuivrais la réalisation d’une camera pleine vue « Full-Frame ». Soyez confiant que si vous avez acheté une lentille DA 70mm, ou vous planifiez d’en acheter une, elle fonctionnera très bien avec un DSLR pleine vue.
    Je vais tester tous les objectifs DA et DA* que je possède dans les prochaines semaines, en suivant la même méthode. Ce n’est pas très scientifique, mais je suis confiant des resultats. C’est ce que je voulais savoir et avais déjà suspecté.

    Editorial: Where will Pentax go from here?

    To begin with, understand that Pentax's future as depicted herein is strictly an opinion or dream of mine and this editorial is not intended to be another rumor about what’s next for Pentax.

    In the old days, (1950 -1970) Pentax had a much greater share of the camera market than they have today. They were the first in many of the cameras development worldwide. Here is a brief history:

    Ever since Pentax introduced their first 35mm SLR in 1952, the Asahiflex I, backward compatibility has been a strong reason for owning a Pentax camera. This is still true today. Here is a partial list of Pentax innovations:


    In 1952, the Asahiflex I was the first Japanese camera introduced to the world. Unlike its competitors, the camera was not a replica of German technology.

    In 1954, the Asahiflex II was the world’s first instant return mirror system.

    In 1957, The Asahi Pentax model used a pentaprism in the viewfinder of a Pentax single lens reflex (SLR) camera, introducing the concept of eye-level viewing. It was the first camera to be marketed under the name Pentax.

    In 1964, Pentax introduced its Spotmatic camera featuring the first through-the-lens (TTL) metering system in a Pentax camera.

    In 1971, the Pentax ES SLR camera, the world's first SLR camera with a TTL aperture-priority AE control, was introduced. Pentax also introduced the Super-Multi Coating (SMC) system for the Asahi Optical Takumar lens series. Other manufacturers followed suit.

    In 1981, Pentax introduced the first through-the-lens autofocus camera, the Pentax ME-F.

    In 1984, Pentax produced the world’s first multi-mode medium format camera, the Pentax 645.

    In 1987, Pentax introduced the SF-1, an autofocus camera with the world’s first AF SLR with a built-in auto flash.

    In 2006, Pentax announced the Pentax K10D, making history again with this revolutionary camera. It is followed by the K20D in 2008.

    All the above confirm that at one time, the Pentax name was well known worldwide. Pentax cameras were selling more than Nikon or Canon. Everyone knew about Pentax and so many had Pentax 35mm cameras. Back then, the "Pros" were using Nikons F series, Leicas, etc. Even back then, Pentax cameras were aimed at the amateurs photographers, especially the 35mm market.

    Pentax did cater to the Professional photographers by introducing the Pentax 645 and the Pentax 67.

    These medium format cameras were very popular, and they still are well respected by "Pros" still shooting film. To me, it looks like Pentax might use a similar approach with the Digital cameras.

    Did you know that only about 5% of the cameras sold are the "Pro-models" costing thousands of dollars? Yes, the "Pros" do need durable cameras that can withstand abuses. Although the big thing now is the Full-Frame DSLRs, my guess is that the Full-Frame sensors will be replaced in the not-so-distant-future with the Medium Format equivalent, such as the Hasselblads, the Mamiyas, the Sinars, etc,. That's what the "Pros" will start using. The price of these Medium Format equivalent DSLRs will likely come down.

    Pentax has already designed a Medium Format DSLR but it was put on hold. Why? My guess is that the demand for non-Professional cameras is Hughes and the price for large sensors is still too high. Computers still have problems with very large digital files, but computers and software will improve exponentially in the years to come. What makes sense to me is a scenario where Pentax would continue making DSLRs with the current APS-C sized sensors, which are getting cheaper and better all the time (Look at the K20D CMOS 14.6 sensor), until the price of large sensors suitable for Medium Format equivalent are affordable.


    Then, they could use the "already designed Pentax Digital 645 SLR" with a new large C-MOS sensor and introduce it as a new Professional platform. Right now the money is in DSLRs (APS-C and FF). It is forseable that through 2009 , more people will upgrade from point & shoot cameras than ever before. Soon, almost every home will have a DSLR, just like nearly every home had a 35mm SLR prior to the digital revolution. Amateurs would have the current platform and "Pros" would have a new platform with incredible image quality.

    On the other hand, who knows what technology will bring in the next five years? Digicams capable of producing high resolution videos as well as 24+MP still images? Holographic cameras? Heck...maybe cell phones with all of the above capabilities. I guess it's all about timing and luck. The 80/20 rule may still apply here; 20% timing and 80% luck, or 20% product and 80% marketing.

    You thought you couldn't use any DA/DA* lenses on future full frame DSLRs from Pentax? Well...think again. (See Update) By: Yvon Bourque

    Dear Pentaxian friends,

    The DA/DA* series of lenses were designed specifically for the Pentax APS-C sized Digital Cameras. The Pentax APS-C sensor is 23.5mm x 15.7mm, and the DA/DA* lenses have an image circle big enough to cover the diagonal length of the sensor. We don't actually know the image circle of every lens that Pentax designed for the DSLRs currently equipped with the APS-C sized sensors. What we know is that if the image circle is smaller than the diagonal of a FF sensor, vignetting will occur.

    Although my lenses are comprized of more FA and C lenses, I have been building my DA/DA* lenses arsenal since my first Pentax DSLR, the *ist D. Currently I have the DA 10-17mm, the DA 18-55mm II, the DA 16-45mm, the DA 50-200mm, the DA 70mm Limited, the DA* 200mm and the DA* 300mm.

    Last week, I decided to get a roll of 35mm film, have it developed in prints as well as on CD, and try all my DA/DA* lenses on an older 35mm SLR, the Pentax PZ-10. I chose the PZ-10 because it was the only old SLR in my very humble collection that had a working battery. Because the DA/DA* lenses have no aperture rings, I could only go by shutter priority. So my examples do not necessarilly compare the 35mm results with the K20D results, as I am not certain of what the aperture was on the PZ-10. However, it's a good reference to determine which lens will produce images acceptable on future FF DSLRs and which will produce too much vignetting. (Of course, you can always crop the vignetting portion) The film I used was Fujifilm Superia @ ISO 400. I took a picture with each lens attached to the PZ-10 and then did the same with my K20D set at ISO 400 in shutter priority (Sv). There was a few days between the shots with film and the shots with the K20D. So basically, I focused on a US flag we have in the parling lot at work, and stood approximately at the same place. The left photos were taken with the K20D and, of course, the right photos were taken with the PZ-10 .

    So here are the results. I probably don't have to add many words, the pictures should speak for themselves. Here goes:

    Pentax K20D ***************** Full Frame

    DA 10 - 17mm @ 10mm

    DA 10 - 17mm @ 17mm

    DA 18 - 55mm II @ 18mm

    DA 18 - 55mm II @ 55mm

    DA 16- 45mm @ 16mm

    DA 16- 45mm @ 45mm

    DA 50- 200mm @ 50mm

    DA 50- 200mm @ 200mm (I guess the aperture must have been very small on the PZ-10 here.) There should be less vignetting at 200mm!

    DA 70mm Limited @ 70mm

    DA* 200mm @ 200mm

    DA* 300mm @ 300mm

    So...you can see that some of the lenses will be very compatible with FF DSLRs and some seem to have vignetting, specially in the wide angle portion.

    UPDATE 10/18/2008 @ 7:10 P.M. Pacific Time.

    I just realized that this topic is hitting home for many. If I get enough requests, I will go ahead and purchase a used Pentax AF 35mm SLR from EBay with the capability of selecting the aperture from the camera (I'm not sure which model does that). Following that, I will test every DA & DA* lenses in both formats, 35mm/FF and APS-C size. I will test each lens at all available aperture, using a tripod positioned exactly at the same place for all shots (35mm and K20D), and show the results here. Let me know your thoughts in the comments at the bottom of the post.

    Current Pentax Lenses not good enough for you?





    Hi Pentaxians and friends,

    Pentax Lenses

    How many times have I heard or read that Pentax didn't have enough lenses to compete with the other DSLR makers. Although this may somewhat be true in the extreme telephoto and extreme zoom lenses, I can't imagine it being a reason not to get a Pentax DSLR. The current available new lenses have a range of 10mm all the way on up to 300mm. They are not all f/2.8 or faster lenses, but with the capabilities of today's DSLRs, I'm not convinced that faster lenses are really that indispensable. You also have a choice of good lenses with Sigma and Tamron. Don't discount the used lens market where the Pentax 400mm and 600mm "A" lenses can still be purchased at a decent price. No, they're not AF but there was good photography before AF you know!

    It's not uncommon to shoot with a DSLR @ ISO800 or higher with very acceptable results. Also, with the shake reduction technology, depending on the lens in use, steady shots can be achieved at a slower speed and thus smaller aperture. I had a discussion with a friend the other day and he was complaining that in the 35mm era, he could easily get a 300mm f/2.8 lens. Well...giving that all Pentax DSLRs are APS-C sized, and that the photographic community keeps comparing/converting APS-C sized lenses to 35mm lenses, the current DA* 200mm f/2.8 is really the equivalent of a 300mm @ f/2.8 for the APS-C sensors. Other than sport photography, not too many people really need extreme telephoto while not using a tripod. Even sport shooters don't usually shoot handheld. They all use a monopod at minimum.

    Do You Really Need a Full-Frame Camera? Article by: Miserere

    Hi Pentaxian friends.

    Aside from writing books for the Pentax line of DSLRs and having this blog site, I surf the internet every night in search of anything Pentax. One of my favorite site and Forum is
    www.photo.net I enjoy posting there and reading the posts from all over the world.

    Several regular contributors on the forum are particularly well informed. Those regular contributors often bring answers to the entry-level photographers, or display some gorgeous pictures, or post challenging point-of-views, etc. The common quality I find in these contributors is that they never belittle anyone’s opinion. I wrote to a handful of these good “Pentax” souls and invited them to participate in my blog by occasionally writing articles. At the end-of-the-day, I really want this blog site to be everyone’s Pentax blog site.

    Today, I am introducing the first article by Miserere. Please shower him with greetings and comments. He already has a follow-up article, “My opinion of whether Pentax should pursue full-frame or not” that will follow soon.

    Do You Really Need a Full-Frame Camera?

    As a child growing up in Europe I watched many American movies and TV series that showcased “the American Way of Life”. To my young eyes it seemed that everything in the United States was bigger, and that made it better. Or at least that was the message I received.

    I first visited the US as a teenager and was surprised to see that what I had learnt from the movies was, in most cases, true. Everything was bigger! The cars, the houses, the roads, the burgers… It was great, I would go to McDonald’s and ask for a medium milkshake; what I got was the equivalent to Europe’s large size. And in the US there were still the large and the extra large sizes available!

    As I became older, and hopefully wiser, I realised that bigger is not necessarily better. Bigger hamburgers can make you fat quicker. Bigger cars use up more fuel and are more expensive to maintain. Bigger houses, like cars, are not only more expensive to maintain, they also take longer to clean, and I hate cleaning! As for bigger roads, OK, I’ll admit that I do like driving in a wide lane, so let’s keep roads bigger, shall we?

    Bigger is better, a mantra repeated down the ages. I’m sure cavemen worked hard to craft the longest spears, the largest bows, and used them to hunt the biggest prey, so it is only natural that in the modern World we should want everything to be BIG.

    Should the sensors in our digital cameras also be the biggest they can be…? (See? I am going to talk about cameras, and you’re not on the wrong blog.)

    Since the inception of DSLRs using cropped sensors (with the 16x24mm APS-C size being the most common) there has been a yearning amongst digital photographers to shoot with a camera incorporating a full-frame (FF) sensor (24x36mm, the size of 35mm film). Why? Maybe because we always desire what we cannot have, but serious complaints have been put forth by many photographers, and so the belief has endured that in order for DSLRs to come of age they need to evolve towards FF. Oh, because bigger is better, of course.

    In the following paragraphs I will list the usual complaints against cropped sensors and attempt to give you a different perspective, one that might lead you to consider whether bigger is indeed better. Let us begin!

    We’ve lost the wide angle.
    A common complaint at the very beginning of cropped sensor cameras. The truth is camera makers released the new cameras without having a full stable of lenses ready for them, so while the bird photographers were having a ball with the 1.5 “magnification” provided by the crop factor, landscapers were crying out in pain for the loss of their beloved 24mm FoV. But in due course, lenses appeared designed specifically for cropped sensors that addressed this issue, and soon the standard kit lens became some variation of 18-50mm or 18-70mm, which offered the same FoV that the old 28-75mm and 28-105mm lenses had on 35mm film. Nowadays you can even buy the Sigma 10-20mm zoom…do you really need wider than 15mm-equiv.? So why are you complaining then?

    The focal lengths are all wrong.
    I never understood this one. Focal lengths are a characteristic of the lens, not of the camera. A 50mm lens will always be a 50mm lens, but the FoV it produces will depend on the size of the film/sensor surface you are using. On a 35mm camera, 50mm is considered neither wide nor telephoto, but on medium format film it is wide. On an Olympus 4/3 camera, it is a telephoto lens, while on APS-C it is a short telephoto. I suspect what people wanted to complain about was the fact that their standard zooms (28-75mm and 70-200mm) didn’t produce the same FoVs anymore. Enter Pentax, who decided to produce the new DA line of lenses that would mimic the FoVs of old. They now offer two standard fast zooms, the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 (24-75mm-equiv.) and the DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 (75-200mm-equiv.), together with a DA 17-70mm f/4 (25-105mm-equiv.), a DA Ltd 35mm macro (53mm-equiv.), and more primes in the pipeline. If you really miss the old FoVs, then sell your old lenses and buy some new ones. Can you imagine a better excuse to feed your inner LBA.

    We’ve lost control over the depth of field.
    Again, I think photographers are actually complaining about something else, as DoF is still controlled with the size of the aperture. The DoF for a given aperture for a particular subject size on the image plane depends on the size of the film/sensor; the larger the size, the shallower the DoF will be. When they switched to APS-C, some photographers missed the thin DoF they could achieve with their f/1.4 or f/2 lenses. For a given subject size in your frame, and using the same aperture, an APS-C camera will provide about 1.6 times greater DoF than a FF. While it may seem like losing 60% of your DoF is a lot, we should remember that a common gripe amongst photographers, whether using manual or auto focus lenses, is that they missed the focus in a critical shot. Think about it; how many times has this happened to you? Having a larger DoF will only increase your chances of achieving correct focus, and I would think that is a good thing, don’t you? In order to achieve the same DoF as you would have with a FF camera (for the same subject size on frame), you will need to open your aperture up by an extra 1.25 stops approximately. This is feasible in most cases, unless in your film days all you did was shoot at f/1.2.

    Cropped sensors have more noise.
    This is true! For equal pixel count, a cropped sensor will have smaller pixels than a FF one. But although a FF sensor has twice the area of an APS-C, the individual pixels are not twice as large, but more like 1.5-1.6 times larger. We also need to remember that noise varies with the square root of the pixel area; so going from FF to APS-C increases the per pixel noise by a factor of around 1.26, which is about 2/3 of a stop. If FF pixels were twice the size of APS-C pixels, then the increase in noise would be a factor of 1.4 (1 stop). What this means in practical terms is that ISO200 on a FF camera should look like ISO100 on APS-C; this is assuming both sensors shared the same manufacturing technology and camera software! It bears noting that software has a lot to do with how noisy a particular camera is, possibly a lot more than sensor technology. But even more important than all these technical details is this: How many times do you need to shoot at ultra high ISO? I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of amateur photographs are taken at no more than ISO200, where the differences in noise between a cropped and FF sensor are insignificant. So why complain about noise if we are rarely going to be shooting at high ISO?

    Cropped sensors don’t have enough resolution.
    This may have been true a few years ago, but not anymore. Pentax released the 14.6MP K20D earlier in the year, while Canon have recently announced their upcoming 15MP 50D. Both use APS-C sensors and offer higher resolution, in linear pixels/inch, than the highest megapixel count FF sensor, the upcoming Sony 24.6MP A900. Furthermore, reports from K20D users suggest that its sensor is challenging their lower quality glass as far as resolution is concerned, so we may have caught up with the resolving power of the available lenses and this may mark the end of the megapixel race (which I would welcome with open arms). Another question I would ask you is “resolution for what?” My parents have a 15x20 photo hanging in their living room that I took with a 6MP P&S, and it looks great! With a 10MP DSLR you can print as large as 20x30 without worries. I believe that’s enough resolution for just about everyone.

    Professional photographers use FF.
    Professional photographers use whatever it takes to get the job done, period. It used to be that the pros used only medium format cameras, and those using 35mm SLRs were considered amateurs. Time passed, camera technology evolved, 35mm film evolved, and picture quality reached the proverbial “good enough” level. Shouldn’t we learn from the past? Cropped sensors are already being used by professionals, and will continue to be. With every new generation of sensors we find that resolution and IQ increase, while noise and read out times decrease. The only quality that never decreases is our capacity to complain about minutia.

    The viewfinder is so small.
    Have you actually looked through a digital FF viewfinder? It is not that big, and it is not that bright either. It does not look like the viewfinder you so loved on your ME Super, that I can assure you. If you want to be able to focus manually more easily, buy a replacement split-prism focusing screen for your current APS-C DSLR; it will be a much cheaper and practical upgrade than going FF.

    Conclusion

    I don’t want to start receiving hate mail telling me I am against FF digital, because I am not. What I am against is hearing and reading photographers complain about how they cannot do this or that because they don’t have a FF camera. Hopefully, I have addressed the major complaints thrown at APS-C sensors and have, if nothing else, made you think twice about what you think FF would really give you that you are not already getting from your current camera right now. FF does have many advantages, but I don’t think it is the Holy Grail that many are making it out to be and not owning one should not be keeping you awake at night.

    Now, stop reading, pick up your perfectly capable APS-C Pentax DSLR, attach your oldest lens to it (extra points if it is an M42 Takumar), and go take photos. You see, you need practice, and if when Pentax brings out their FF you are still taking the same pictures you are today, then FF is going to do nothing to improve them and you’ll just be throwing money down the drain.

    While you do that, I’ll go across the street and get myself a small strawberry milkshake; because when it is that tasty, small is all I need.

    APS-C versus Full-Frame. What's the deal?

    Are you confused with the conversion factor of 1.4 to 1.6 (and probably other conversion factors I don't know about) applied to most lenses designed for the 35mm format but used on DSLR using an APS-C sized sensor? Well, maybe this will help. Using AutoCAD and PhotoShop, I was able to make the sketches herein.

    All lenses designed for the 35mm film format project an image circle on the film plane of roughly 43mm in diameter, regardless of the focal length of the lens. I am showing a 300mm lens in the figures herein, but all lenses designed for the 35mm film format project the same size image circle on the 35mm film plane. A 35mm film frame measures 36mm x 24mm and therefore the image recorded is not round, but measures 36mm x 24mm. The portion of the round image outside the 35mm frame is wasted.
    See figure above for an overlay of the image circle, the 36 x 24mm film or full frame , the APS-C sensor and a 4 x 5 inch film sheet. See figure below for the actual 35mm film full frame. It is full frame 35mm film format because it captures the rectangular image of 36 x 24mm within the image circle.

    What seems to confuse a lot of people is the perception that a lens designed for a 35mm film format, used on a APS-C sensor, becomes 1.5 times more powerful. I have heard, as example, that a 300mm lens designed for 35mm film format becomes a 450mm on a DSLR with an APS-C sensor (as 300mm x 1.5 = 450mm). That would be magic. A 300mm lens is a 300mm lens is a 300mm lens. Got it? What changes, is that because the APS-C sensor is smaller than the full frame 35mm format, the image is cropped. It appears to be a longer telephoto, but it is not. The angle of view changes, because of the smaller size sensor of 23.5 x 15.7mm. It's no different that cropping an image in PhotoShop. See figure below for the APS-C crop.

    Now, if you were to use a lens designed for a 35mm formal and use it on a 4 x 5 inch view camera, the image circle would not be big enough to cover the entire 4 x 5 frame. What you would get is a round image in the middle. See figure below.

    Using a wide angle lens would have the same effect. As example, a 20mm lens designed for the 35mm film format would give a angle of view equivalent to a 30mm lens. Again, you are just cropping the image.


    Owners of APS-C sized DSLRs claim that they get more telephoto for the money. Similarly, the owners of full frame DSLRs claim that they get more wide angle for the money. Nobody can win at that game, it all depends what you shoot more often. Wildlife and sport photographer will have an edge with longer telephoto, while keeping the same widest aperture, for a lot less money. On the other hand, Landscape and architectural photographers will benefit from the true wide angle of their lenses. If you take all kind of pictures, you decide what's more important to you.


    The sensors have evolved a lot in the past ten years or so. Most cameras were using CCD sensors a while back. Now, with technology advances and production costs going down, CMOS sensors are being used more and more. The bigger the sensor, the less noise is introduced and the higher ISO settings can be used. At this time, CMOS full frame sensors seem to be the fashionable sensors because they produce less noise. What about all those lenses I bought for my Pentax K10D? If Pentax joins the current trend and use full frame sensors, all my DA lenses won't work with full frame. The image circle will be too small. I am confident that the evolution of sensors will be such that APS-C sensors will produce less and less noise. I can use my lens designed for the 35mm format on my APS-C sized sensor DSLR, but cannot use the DA lenses on full frame DSLRs. Beside, it costs less to manufacture APS-C lenses and we stand to gain from that.
