News from Ned Bunnell, former president of Pentax USA. He is missed by the Pentax community.

Hi Photographer friends,

Ned Bunnell is the former President of Pentax USA. Ned is now retired but is still an avid photographer. You can read Ned's posts here http://nedbunnell.posterous.com/

For all the Pentaxians that asked, Ned Bunnell is alive and well, but very busy after a year of big success for Pentax.

Hi Pentaxian friends,

I received many emails asking if Ned Bunnell was still with Pentax and why he had not post anything on his blogsite for many Months. Although I haven't spoke with Ned lately, I did talk to his entourage and Ned is alive and well, working hard in promoting Pentax.

I assume that since the K-x really hit big this past year, and the K-7 doing almost equally well, then the all-weather W90 being the most popular P&S last year, all contributed to keep him busy. If you are able to attend photokina, you may have a chance to see him there.

Ned is, in my opinion, the biggest asset that Pentax/Hoya have. He has brought Pentax, with the help of his "A" team in Colorado U.S. Headquarter,  to a new level.

We are all anticipating additional equipment to be announced at photokina, and I have a strong feeling that we won't be let down.

Thank you for reading,

Hi Pentaxian friends.

Ned Bunnell is interviewed By Dave Etchells, The Imaging Resource .

"A stalwart of the photography industry, Pentax has a long-standing reputation for quality optics and solidly-built camera bodies at affordable prices. (How many hundreds of thousands of photographers of a certain age cut their teeth on a Pentax K1000?) After an initially rocky transition to the digital era, Pentax has recently made great strides with their K-7 and K-x SLR models, and their 2010 digicam lineup includes some refreshingly different aesthetic designs. At PMA 2010, IR Publisher Dave Etchells and Senior Editor Shawn Barnett caught up with Ned Bunnell, President of the US division - Pentax Imaging Co. - and both an industry veteran and a serious enthusiast photographer in his own right. Ned shared some interesting perspectives on the industry as a whole and Pentax's place in it - Read on for all the details:

Photo.net Interview with Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax

Hi Pentaxian friends.

I found this Photo.net Interview with Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax
by Hannah Thiem

Although it doesn't seem that Mr. Bunnell reads my blog, according to his answers in the interview below, I know he does read it from time to time. He's a busy man and certainly couldn't list all the different sites he regularly visits. He actually talked about me on his blog a few time. I'm okay with that :)

Here is a few lines of the interview, to be continued by following the link to Photo.net.

Ned Bunnell is the President of Pentax Imaging (USA), and an avid photographer. He considers himself very fortunate to have a day job that combines his love of photography with leading a company in selling and marketing cameras. Prior to Pentax, he worked in product marketing and planning roles at Canon Computer Systems, Polaroid, Adobe Systems, Agfa-Gevaert and NEC. Ned has also operated two studios over the course of his career, most recently Bunnell Photography in San Clemente, CA.

We had a chance to sit down with Ned at PMA, as well as a follow-up on some camera and market details later this fall at their press event at the International Center of Photography in New York City for their release of the K-x. Ned was very gracious to go over his past history and what lead to his current career as the president of Pentax, as well as reveal what blogs he frequents, and which Pentaxian photographers he finds inspiring. Read on! http://photo.net/photographer-interviews/ned-bunnell/

Hi Pentaxian friends.

We, Pentaxians, don't always realize how fortunate we are to have the President of Pentax USA, "Mr. Ned Bunnell", communicating directly with us through his Blogsite. Last year, I wrote an article about how owning a Pentax DSLR was more like being part of a family, and it's still true today. You should read it, then continue reading this current article.

Mr. Bunnell has formed a team of superstars, all working at the Golden, Colorado office. Notably helpful members of the team are, not necessarily in order of importance, Michelle Martin, who is the PR & Events Manager for Pentax USA. She is the person that more people contact at Pentax, and she has the great personality that such a position requires. She even has her email posted with all Pentax Press releases. John Carlson, Product Manager and maybe an higher title by now, has several videos on YouTube introducing Pentax DSLRs and also has a presence on DPReview and PentaxForums. You can be sure that his comments on the forums are official, and correct. Chris Pound, currently Product Manager under John Carlson, (I think that's right), can be seen at all Events and also hosts the new Video on YouTube introducing the new K-7. What a great job he did. You can't help but like Chris' extroverted personality.

Pentax currently feature four photographers as part of the Pentaxian.com site. I met "The Inspirationalist" - Marc Dimalanta, "The Naturalist" - Julie Quarry, and the "Die Hard" - Kerrick James. All three are excellent photographers and great people. The K-7 might allow any of us to produce a bio with the HD video similarly to their bios on the Pentaxians site. I posted my interview with Makc a while back and I will post my interview with Julie sometime soon, I promise.

There are many more great members to the Pentax team, but the above are the people I had the opportunity to meet.

That said, don't miss the current article on Ned Bunnell's blog, all about the K-7 video capabilities.

Meeting with Pentax Executives

I was an honor for me to shake hands with Mr. Ned bunnell, President of Pentax USA. Try to shake hands with the President of other DSLR equipment manufacturers! Mr. Bunnell is definitely pulling strings for all of us. The future of Pentax is in good hands...you just wait and see.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

We have met with many Pentax executives and staff Yesterday, and we are meeting witt them again today at 3:00 PM, Las Vegas time. In my meeting with them today, I will ask the many questions received from you the readers. I am hopefull that we will get some positive answers.

I thought that I could just update this blog from several times everyday while at the PMA floor, but the price for wireless internet access withing the buildings is $99.00 and you have to understand that I pay for all this from my own pocket.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the coming week. One of the good news is that I have made connection with so many vendors that will send me equipment to test.

March 3rd, first day of PMA09 exhibition and trade show. Walking around the exhibition hall with the K2000 in hand.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

My wife and I arrived at the PMA09, at the Las Vegas Convention Hall, around 10:30 A.M. Anne (wife) carried her white K2000 around her neck and we weren't even pass the entrance when people started asking her questions about the camera. I know how controversial the introduction of a "White" DSLR was and still is amongst some Pentaxians. Let me tell you that Pentax should and will probably order more. Speaking with Mr. Ned Bunnell today, introducing a White K2000 was a hit or miss decision. Pentax, as a Company, really listens to their customers and in the case of the K2000, the customers have spoken and I believe Pentax has already sold all or most of the White K2000 DSLRs. I believe that they will acquire more of them...it's another winner.

I was not going to take a picture of my wife in front of the PMA sign, but a gentleman asked her to pose with the White K2000, so I took one too.

I was watching the reaction of the crowd and I was surprised to see how many men were asking questions about the camera . I haven't heard anyone say they didn't like the camera. It's one thing to see pictures of the camera on the Internet, but seeing one in the real world and holding one makes a big difference.

While we were visiting the Tamrac booth, one of the representative Macki, couldn't keep her hands off the camera. My wife went on and on about all the features and Macki agreed and said it is about time.

Remember that it has the same sensor as the K10D, but the algorithm has been improved upon. I was taking a picture the other day, with my K20D, carefully analyzing the composition, taking the shot in RAW format and then post processing it in Lightroom to make the final image as close to the actual scene as I could. I thought I had done a god job, when Anne simply said, "I took that picture with my white camera while you were taking yours. I looked at her picture, taken in the "AUTO PICT" mode of the K2000 and it was just as good as mine. I would never admit it to her, and criticized her composition, but...it was painful. All that to say that it's a very good little DSLR. I can't imagine a better "bridge" camera. Furthermore, if you like the attention, this little gem will bring you some. Get ready to have people approaching you everywhere you go. Anne loves it.

Pentax Flash Photography tutorials.

Hi Pentax friends,

I'm not sure if I am the last person to discover the excellent flash tutorials offered through the Pentax USA website, but I am impressed with the tutorials, especially the wireless flash section.

I look at the site often and I never saw these tutorials. There are (3) three tutorials:

  1. On board flash
  2. Hot shoe mounted flash
  3. Wireless flash

At the time of my post, I noticed that tutorials # 2 and #3 seem to be the same wireless flash tutorial. I will contact Michelle Martin at Pentax to verify if this is correct. However, I think that tutorial # 2 was omitted.

Click on the picture below to view the tutorial # 1 (On board flash):

Look who I found posing as model in the tutorial # 1. Yes, it's Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax USA. If you follow Ned's blog, you will recognize other familiar faces as well. It's great to see that Ned is involved at all levels of the Pentax USA organization.

Click on the picture below to view tutorial # 3 (Wireless flash):

I found the tutorial # 3 excellent and very easy to understand. You can set your DSLR/wireless Flash or flashes by following the video, stopping it while adjusting your equipment, then resuming.

This is an awesome tutorial. I found that more questions are generated on the various forums about wireless flash than any other technical questions. This tutorial shows how to use up to three flashes in wireless mode.

As usual, thanks to the Pentax team for a job well done.

OK1000 Pentax Blog also had a good article about wireless P-TTL flash with the AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ flashes.

Best regards,

Yvon Bourque

Pentax Photo Gallery nominated for Webby Award.

Mr. Ned Bunnell...He's the man.

Hi fellow Pentaxians and friends,

I spend a great deal of time promoting the virtues of Pentax products, on my blog site and everywhere else I meet someone interested in photography. If someone is not fascinated with digital photography, I usually start a conversation about it. I am obsessed with photography and the whole line of Pentax cameras and lenses. I’m probably a good definition of what a Pentaxian is. Fortunately, I am not alone and the group of Pentaxians is growing rapidly. I spent my entire adult life using Pentax products and I always got more for my hard earned money than from any other manufacturer. This is still true today and a new generation of photographers and enthusiasts are discovering Pentax everyday.

Ever since Mr. Ned Bunnell was promoted to President of Pentax USA, the US division has taken a new prosperous direction. I have several posts on this blogsite about the changes at Pentax.(Owning a Pentax DSLR is more like being part of a family) - ( PMA08) - ( Pentax will rise again) etc. The facts are that my entire blog is about photography using Pentax equipment. It seems that the good news is spreading around and both Pentax USA and Mr. Bunnell are getting the recognition that they deserve. In case you haven’t visited the Pentax USA site lately, there is an excerpt from the site’s news at the bottom of this post.

Mr. Bunnell, Congratulation for doing such a great job and for leading Pentax to new heights. I'm sure you have more great plans for Pentax and I am looking forward to growing my photographic skills right along with Pentax growth. \

Mr. Bunnell, if you happen to read this humble post sometimes, I am torned between the idea of having Pentax equipment available through outlets/mega stores such as "Best Buy", "Costco", "Circuit City", "Sams Club", etc. I like the idea of buying camera equipment through specialized camera stores because the employees are likely more experienced in photography than the clerk working in the camera section at one of the mega stores. On the other hand, there is this new generation of photographers that never heard about Pentax or perceive Pentax as a company that was in existence during their father's time. The same generation's perception of reality is more geared toward the Internet, cell phones, iPODs, and for the most part, they shop at the mega Electronic stores. Many have credit cards and accounts at these stores. Would that help with sales or hurt the Pentax Image? Would that help with sales and also promote the products to the new generation?

Thanks for reading and GO PENTAX!

Yvon Bourque
